What are the Three Scopes?

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol sets the international standard for measuring and managing carbon emissions across three scopes. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources that a company owns or controls. This includes emissions from fuel combustion in company vehicles or machinery, as well as on-site heating systems like gas boilers. These are emissions the business has direct control over. Commercial are striving to eliminate 100% of our Scope 1 by 2028. Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the company. Although the emissions occur at the energy producer’s site, they are attributed to the business that consumes the energy. We’re striving to eliminate 100% of our Scope 2 by 2028. Scope 3 encompasses all other indirect emissions that occur from any activity linked to the running of a company. This includes emissions from purchased goods and services, transportation, waste, business travel, and even the use of the company’s products by their customers. Scope 3 is often the largest and most complex category, as it spans emissions the company doesn’t directly control but is indirectly responsible for. We’re striving to eliminate a minimum of 50% by 2028.
